A recent study suggests that individuals who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.
Published data in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"People buying such treatments need to be informed of the risk of fast weight regain when the treatment ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a return to original mass within about a year and a half.
Weighing Therapies
The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with other pills.
Researchers note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally see a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Experts propose the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened rebound.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this medication results in appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."
A Lifelong Condition?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Testimonies
Users who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful return of cravings.
"It felt as if a switch activating and you're instantly starving," recalled an individual.
The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Significant Interest
Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is higher among females than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians caution that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success relies on combined lifestyle support.
